Explorations in Somatic Psychotherapy

2010 Workshop Schedule

Stress, Trauma, and Somatic Psychotherapy
Saturday Jan 16th, 2010, 9:30am – 5:30pm
6.5 CEs for MFTs, LCSWs and Psychologists.
Rosen Center, 825 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA
**New: Now Offering CEs for Psychologists**

This workshop explores, from a somatic psychotherapy perspective, the relationship of developmental stress patterns and the conditioning their influence has on later traumatic stress experiences and resulting resource limitations. Developmental stress arises when the learning of natural developmental tasks is interrupted or restricted. The resulting characterological patterns become deeply marked in the body and thus become part of a person’s felt sense of self. Traumatic wounding overwhelms existing resources and sets into motion many psychological, emotional, and physical survival patterns.

A client’s stress related issues present in therapy along a continuum (the stress continuum). At one end of this continuum are the minor activations associated with responses to increases in daily stress. At the other end of this continuum are the un-modulated activations associated with dysregulated traumatic stress. Where and how a person organizes along the stress continuum is strongly conditioned by earlier characterological patterns. In this workshop we will explore identifying where a client is on the stress continuum, ways to modulate the stress response threshold, and somatic resourcing approaches that support a client in their process of transforming unmodulated stress arousal.

This experiential class is designed to be clinically useful for both new and experienced psychotherapists who want to work somatically with client’s stress activation levels. The workshop will include lecture, demonstration, and practice.
