“Being Embodied as Therapist”

In the process of somatic psychotherapy the quality of embodied connection and interaction between client and therapist is essential. This means that it is very important for the therapist to be aware of and present to his or her physical experience. This workshop will focus on the quality of somatic resonance between client and therapist, as well as on the therapist’s capacity to stay physically resourced and present with the somatic and psychological work being explored. Through didactic and experiential exercises you will learn important somatic resources that will support you as a therapist in practicing somatic psychotherapy.

“Building New Somatic Resources”

Resources are those things, actions, and qualities that we draw upon for support in times of need. They help us deal effectively with the variable situations that life presents to us. When resources are inadequate one’s ability to transform & heal becomes restricted. This workshop will explore body-based resources and their practical usefulness in psychotherapy. The physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of our experience are interactive and mutually influential. Change on a physical level affects one’s mental and emotional functioning. Change on a psychological level affects the body. Sustained change becomes possible for a client when new options become available that offer alternatives to older and more limiting physical and psychological patterns. The ability to identify and work with a client’s existing and missing psycho-physical resources is an essential part of successful therapy.

“Working at the Mind/Body Interface”

A central principle of Psycho-Physical Therapy is that we are whole; that mind and body are indivisible components of that integrated whole. A client’s psychological issues are inseparable from what is occurring in his or her body. The quality and depth of the therapy is enhanced when a therapist can identify and work with both physical and psychological issues as part of a simultaneous therapeutic process. The ability to work smoothly and effectively back and forth across the interface between physical and psychological experience is at the core of successful somatic psychotherapy. This one day class explores the interface between physical and psychological experience.
You will learn to:
  • Identify and work with the physical and psychological components of a client’s presenting issues.
  • To track a client’s psycho-physical responses to therapeutic explorations, interventions and interactions.
  • Techniques for working back and forth between the psychological and physical expression of underlying issues will be taught.
  • Interventions that encourage psycho-physical integration will also be taught.
The class will include clinically useful information, observational skills and tools for working with physical experience as an expression of psychological material.

The Heart and the Body of Shame”

The body gives form to the mind’s stories and conversely the mind is informed about the world though input from the body. This idea is expressed nicely in the saying, “Form influences function and function influences form”. The postures, movements, and general tension patterns of a person’s body both reveal and influence the deeply held habitual patterns that form the foundation of self perception on physical, emotional and psychological levels. Working with the interaction of body and mind is a significant way to alter old limiting patterns.
Shame is a story of self-rejection and feeling of worthlessness. This workshop will focus on the story and the physical form of shame as it uniquely manifests in a client. We will explore the role the heart plays in transforming this story. This experiential class will present clinically useful material for working with shame-based issues from a somatic psychotherapy perspective. The building of new somatic resources that alter limiting survival patterns will be addressed.
