The term Psycho-Biomechanics refers to the interaction of mental, emotional and physical forces as they relate to the mechanics of movement in living structures, specifically humans. A person's psychological patterns are reflected in the way they move. What a person experiences physically and what they believe mentally, are intimately connected. Psycho-Biomechanics explores the interface between physical movement patterns and psychological organization.
Psycho-Biomechanics is a therapeutic approach used in the building of psycho-physical resources. It is taught as a major part of the Professional Somatic Resourcing Training. Recognizing the integrative nature of psychological and somatic experiences, Psycho-Biomechanics works with:
1) Physical movement patterns with the purpose of deepening awareness of restricted
movement patterns and associated limiting psychological beliefs.
2) Re-educating more integrated and efficient physical movements and corresponding
psychological options through the creation of new biomechanical capabilities.
3) Supporting structural change in the body that creates expanded psychological possibilities.
4) The exploration of the relationship between a client's physical movements and their
psychological issues with the intention of facilitating greater awareness, integration, balance
and expanded options for effective action in the world.
This process of deepening awareness of the interface of mind and body, and the creation new options for somatic and psychological expression is called building Psycho-Physical Resources. We are changed by new experiences and ultimately by the way we reorganize around these new experience. The continuation of daily habitual behaviors and patterns of organization does not lead to much change. It is when we accept and begin to integrate tangible new experiences into our daily lives that we start to change. It is our awareness of new options that begins to change us.
Psycho-Biomechanics is an important part of a larger body of work called Psycho-Physical Therapy. Psycho-Physical Therapy is a method of therapy that integrates approaches of both psychotherapy and body therapy in one simultaneous process. The therapeutic work is continually integrating the physical with the psychological and vice versa. The normal cultural distinctions about the separation of body, mind and spirit are viewed as occasionally useful dichotomies, but are not seen as a true picture of a client's reality. We are a complex interacting system where all parts are inseparable from the whole. This therapeutic method requires a fundamental attitude shift away from the standard cultural paradigm of seeing and working with the separation of body, mind and spirit. We believe it is important to address and work with all parts of life experience . Clients come to Psycho-Physical Therapy looking to transform some aspect of their life. We work with building new resources that support this transformation. As therapists we are not the transformers and creators of new health. Health already exists within each person. We help a client create the conditions where nature can respond to the client and transformation emerges.
